Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa - Historic

Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa in Malta opened in 2006, after 4 years in the making. The architect chosen for this 5 star hotel project was Martin Xuereb, and the interior design was entrusted to Mark Pace, who has worked on several other hotels both in Malta and overseas. Mark Pace focused on creating intimate spaces within the Hotel. He came up with the Asian themed indoor swimming pool area in the Lotus Spa Myoka premises and created a different contemporary yet subtle mood for each restaurant of our 5 star Hotel.

Hotel Back Entrance

On the 1st of March 2006, Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa in Malta opened its doors to its first guests and was blessed by Fr. Joe Falzon O. Carm, the then Parish Priest of Balluta Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The main building is indeed very new but it is also set on the grounds of Villa Cassar Torregiani, which was turned into The Villa Brasserie, a restaurant partnered with the Hotel. The back entrance of Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa gives onto Balluta Square. The many oak trees on the square gave their name to the place: "Ballut" is the Maltese name for an oak tree. Opposite the Hotel are the "Balluta Buildings" which were designed by architect Giuseppe Psaila at the beginning of the 20th century. The Parish Church that one can admire from a sea view hotel room at Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa traces its beginning to 1858 with the building of a chapel aimed at welcoming the faith of the fishermen families inhabiting this area of Malta in those times. In 1877, a larger church in gothic style was built to replace the small one. The Church became part of a monastery, had to be rebuilt several times throughout the years (also after the war that left quite a few scars to Malta) and in 1972 the new Church (the present one) was opened for use by the public.

Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa in Malta already welcomed various celebrities both from the showbiz industry (Bryan Adams, Rachel Weisz, Zucchero, José Carreras,... to name a few) to the professional sportive scene with the hosting of the Juventus Football Team, which visited Malta in January 2008.
