Catherine Gonzi opens exhibition of Christian Urpani's mosaics
St Julians, Malta - 1st June 2010. Catherine Gonzi, Deputy Chairperson of the Richmond Foundation, is to open an exhibition of mural mosaics by Christian Urpani in the exhibition area on Level 1 at Le Méridien St Julians Hotel & Spa on Wednesday, 9 June. Part of the proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Richmond Foundation.
Urpani is to exhibit some 60 of his latest works dating back to the past two years. Each piece is totally different and unique since he uses unlikely combinations of materials and textures for his work, which is framed and ready to be hung. Apart from obtaining inspiration from nature, he has created imaginative Maltese landscapes and is also au courant with contemporary modern art trends, in line with the requisites of interior design.
He uses a play of texture and light to create infinite reflections and refractions, in contrast with the flat harshness of natural materials, like granite. Urpani hand-cuts each piece to achieve the flowing shapes and three-dimensional patterns.
Largely self-taught, he believes he has not even reached the half-way stage in his artistic development, despite having been expressing his creative talent for more than a decade. Although his works have been sent abroad, he would relish the opportunity to rise to the next level by having his works exhibited at some international venue, even alongside that of other mosaic artists.
The mural mosaics of Christian Urpani will be on display at Le Méridien St Julians until 13 June.
